Summer Bucket List – 10+1 Must-Try Experiences in Veszprém and the Bakony-Balaton Region

There’s something inexplicably magical about summers spent at Lake Balaton. They’re filled with memories of our childhood: days spent at the beach, the unmissable combination of lángos and hake, the inimitable scent of Lake Balaton, and that feeling that this summer might never end.

Despite the nostalgia factor, however, as adults we often feel that the summer months always go by too quickly. But why not make them unforgettable? A magical sunset in Sajkod, a spontaneous detour to the Kál Basin, an atmospheric concert at Szigliget Castle, or an unforgettable evening under the Balaton sky.

In Veszprém and the Bakony-Balaton region, you have everything you need to make more memories in a single weekend than you would elsewhere during an entire vacation. In the morning, you can take a dip in Lake Balaton, in the afternoon you’ll be wandering along a forest trail, and by evening you’ll find yourself in the midst of a festival, concert, or special cultural event.

We’ve compiled a list of experiences that we think no summer bucket list should be without. Which one will you start with?

1. Spend an active summer with the active programs offered by the European Region of Sport 2026

Every (bike) route is part of the European region of Sport, which brings the most exciting forms of exercise right to your neighborhood all summer long: you don’t have to be an Olympian to join in! In addition to sunset kayaking tours on Lake Balaton and open-water training sessions, shaded bike tours, scenic runningroutes, and community sports programs await you throughout the region.

And if you want to recharge your soul as well as your body, try the CODE one-of-a-kind immersive yoga and Pilates classes, where movement, lighting, and digital art come together to create a unique experience.

2. Immerse yourself in the diverse lineup of events at the Night of Museums!

A night when everything comes to life! On June 20, during the Night of Museums, Veszprém and its surroundings will once again transform into one giant festival venue: a vibrant array of cultural programs paired with colors, lights, scents, and atmospheres. The main theme of this year’s event is Stories Captured in Flavors, which explores the connection between gastronomy and culture.  1 ticket, 25 venues, 30 exhibitions, 95 events: during this unforgettable summer evening, there will be special guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, fascinating lectures, and exciting accompanying programs await museum enthusiasts of all ages.

3. Let Yourself Be Swept Away: An Exhibition Without Frames – VASARELY at CODE!

CODE Center of Digital Experiences' latest immersive production, VASARELY – The Father of Op Art—now brings the world-renowned artist’s works closer to you than you’ve ever experienced before: Vasarely’s paintings step out of their frames and come to life all around you.

And if you're looking for a unique social gaming experience, try out the CODE PLAY interactive game , where the immersive space transforms into a real digital playground— exciting adventures, not just for kids.

4. Discover the region’s most beautiful landscapes in full bloom

A sea of flowers as far as the eye can see: summer is also the season of flower fields. In the old region, red poppies kicked off the season in May, but in recent weeks, the fields have been blanketed by poppy flowers glowing in purple, and lavender. Whether you’re looking for a short outing, a romantic stroll, or just want to take a few special photos, the area’s flower fields are guaranteed to be among the most beautiful moments of the summer.

5. Lose yourself in the fairy-tale world of Kabóciádé

In June,  Kabóca Puppet Theater will once again open its doors to the Kingdom of Kabócia in the Valley of the Monasteries and Gardens of Veszprém. The 33rd Kabóciádé this year from June 26 to 28 welcomes young and old alike: during the festival, the whole family can explore the world of fairy tales, theater, and games together. Giant puppets, concerts, street theater, creative workshops, and special adventures await you in one of the city’s most beautiful green settings.

6. Take an imaginary journey through time at the Castle Prison!

At the foot of Veszprém Castle, you can find a former dungeon, which operated as a prison until 2003; today, it has been revitalized as The Human Behind Bars —an interactive exhibition and guided tours—offers a unique insight into thethrough the lens of crime and punishment.

7. Take a dip in Lake Balaton at the region’s best beaches

There’s no such thing as a summer bucket list without a trip to the beach. Fortunately, both shores of Lake Balaton are full of charming beach spots, and everyone can find their favorite among them. Take, for example, family-friendly Balatonalmádi and Alsóörs beaches, the panoramic views of Tihany, the atmosphere of Balatonfüred, or a quieter, less less-known stretch of shore—one thing is certain: nothing compares to the sunsets over Lake Balaton. But if you take our advice, don’t miss the sunset—trust us, you won’t be disappointed, because every day brings a new, magical spectacle.

8. Can't stand the summer heat? Head to the Bakony Hills!

When it starts to get too hot on the shores of Lake Balaton, the shady forests of the Bakony Hills offer moments of true coolness and refreshment. Cuha Valley, Hubertlaki Lake, Gerence Valley, or Odvaskő Cave are perfect destinations for a pleasant family outing. Walks along the stream, leafy trails, small bridges, and natural treasures waiting to be discovered await those who’d like to escape the summer hustle and bustle for a bit. An added bonus is that most of the trails can be easily completed even with little kids.

9. Fill your summer with music and culture

Veszprém becomes a true cultural hub in the summer: Gyárkert concerts will fill the city with music and parties night after night, starting June 19; Rozé, Riesling & Jazz Festival from July 10–19 will once again take over the historic city center; between July 15 and 18., world-renowned artists will be performing at VeszprémFest, but don’t miss out on the parties at Nyárkert either! Whether you’re in the mood for a large-scale concert or a cozy outdoor music evening, you’re sure to find an event that’ll make it worth staying up late.

10. Get a taste of summer at Lake Balaton!

You know that feeling when the sun has almost set below the horizon, a warm summer breeze is wafting around you, and you’re sitting peacefully on a wine terrace, simply letting yourself be swept away by the inimitable Lake Balaton vibe? Artisanal ice cream, local delicacies, Lake Balaton wines, charming wine cellars, and restaurants with panoramic views await you throughout the region. A glass of Olaszrizling among the vineyards or an award-winning ice cream on the shores of Lake Balaton is sometimes a perfect outing all on its own.
