Yoga is a lifestyle and form of exercise with a history of more than 5,000 years that promotes harmony between the human body, mind, and spirit. Regular practice reduces stress, improves concentration and focus, while strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility, supports the body’s regeneration, and calms the nervous system. During the classes, we perform movements in sync with our breathing, known as asanas, which, when performed in sequence, provide a kind of moving meditation experience. Breathing exercises help calm the mind, create inner peace, increase lung capacity, and build muscle strength. The word “yoga” comes from Sanskrit and means “connection.” The goal of the practice is to bring us closer to ourselves, to pay more conscious attention to our body, mind, and spirit. Yoga can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or prior experience. It is no coincidence that it is included on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
