Introduction

Three lakes play an important role in the beauty of the Tihany landscape: Lake Balaton, the Lake Külső (Outer Lake), and the Lake Belső (Inner Lake). However, the list is not complete, as in rainy years a fourth one appears: Rátai-csáva. All three inland lakes on the peninsula formed in former volcanic craters, simply by the accumulation of rainwater. They are not fed by springs or streams, which explains their occasional drying up—a phenomenon that has occurred with all three lakes over the past centuries.

The Lake Belső lies directly below the village. Almost perfectly round, its water surface is open and sits 26 meters above Lake Balaton, in the sunken caldera of a volcanic eruption. Once famous for its rich flora and fauna, today it is a popular fishing spot.

Accessibility

The Lake Belső in Tihany can be reached by car via Aranyház Street and Major Street, where a limited number of parking spaces are available at their junction. Numerous hiking and cycling trails cross the area. The nearest intercity bus stop is “Tihany, Aranyház utca,” from which the lake is just a short walk away.
