The Son

Anne suddenly approaches her ex-husband, Pierre, to tell him that there is a problem with their teenage son, Nicolas. Pierre agrees to help. Nicolas moves in with him and his new family.But in this typical modern, busy, trendy patchwork family, no one has enough patience for a boy struggling with adolescent depression. They lack the tools to recognize or address the severity of the problem. In Florian Zeller’s darkly humorous play, Nicolas remains inscrutable throughout: at times a defiant, at times a helplessly despairing teenager, at other times charming and witty, or a liar whose deception is exposed. The play places equal emphasis on the world of the adults surrounding the boy. Their everyday anxieties, unfulfilled desires, insecurities, and good intentions. The story quietly moves toward its conclusion; the only question is when and how the accumulated tension will erupt.
