From Volksbund to Tiszalök, the Calvary of Germans in Hungary. January 2026 will mark 80 years since the first train carrying German families deported from Hungary set off, but the struggle for justice began even earlier. Our invited speakers are Professor of History Sándor Őze and Barbara Bank, member of NEB.
Brief summary of the program:
January 2026 will mark 80 years since the first train carrying German families deported from Hungary set off, but the legal proceedings had already begun earlier. Our experts will discuss the 1941 census and how the political police used the collected data, and with reference to this, how the political police used the collected material for actions against ethnic Germans. They mention the internments ordered in parallel with the deportations, which affected soldiers who had fought in the German army, members of the Volksbund (many of whom were imprisoned in the Veszprém Dungeon), and families who were evicted from their homes under the guise of land reform, but they did not yet know or want to send them to Germany on the resettlement trains. The shocking data and documents presented come from the Central Statistical Office's (KSH) Thirring collection and the Historical Archives of the State Security Services (ÁBTL).
