The leader of the Coloris Trio is Suh Soojin, a Korean creative musician and drummer. The trio’s core concept is that of a dynamically functioning ensemble whose members harmonize their “melodic breath.” This is one of the fundamental concepts of traditional Korean music. Soojin also places great emphasis on narrative forms, meticulously crafted arrangements, and improvisation stemming from the pulse of the melody. On the band’s album Colorist, band leader Soojin’s compositions create numerous captivating moments and create a new musical texture, drawing on a distinctly Korean aesthetic. The members’ roles here go beyond the traditional forms of piano trio and composition.
The Suh Soojin Coloris Trio album was selected by the American music platform Bandcamp for the compilation The Best Jazz on Bandcamp: August 2020. New York Public Radio’s “New Sounds” program also featured the trio in a series highlighting innovative piano trios that have emerged since the Bill Evans Trio. In 2021, the trio won the Best Jazz Performance award at the Korean Music Awards for their album Colorist. In addition to their active role in the Korean jazz scene, between 2021 and 2023 they were invited to perform at international festivals such as EFG London Jazz Festival (United Kingdom), Enjoy Jazz Festival (Germany) and the Jazz in July Festival (Singapore), further expanding their international presence.
Building on its international recognition, the trio released their album Prism of Existence in 2026 on the Endectomorph Music label. The album was recorded over the course of four years, during four separate recording sessions. It is an ambitious reimagining of the jazz piano trio from a drummer’s perspective. It takes the listener on a personal journey through the uncertainties of human existence, shaping abstract thoughts into soundscapes rich with meaning. Upon its release, Prism of Existence was included in the The Best Jazz on Bandcamp: June 2026, which once again reaffirmed the trio’s place at the forefront of contemporary innovative jazz. Following the album release, the trio will embark on an international tour to share its ever-evolving musical vision with audiences around the world.
