Pécs Ballet: Carmen
Carmen is a symbol of freedom. Her story is a drama of unquenchable, wild love.
"Carmen's story, the extreme emotional world of the characters, and Bizet's music are very powerful and inspiring. For me, the main inspiration comes from the story and the sharp contrasts in the music. I am drawn to the unpredictability and suddenness of the characters, which stems from their emotional intensity. How can one go from an idyllic state of calm to the brink of madness in an instant? How can passion take over rationality, where does the primal force that leads to tragedy come from, and why is it impossible to fight against it? Where is the boundary between love, passion, and possessiveness? Is passionate love fundamentally an irrational state?
Expressing Carmen's personality and conveying the wild fluctuations of her emotions through dance is a wonderful opportunity. In my opinion, there is no greater challenge than bringing Don José's and his character's changes for the dancer. For me, he is the central figure, the real drama. The simple, honest, pure-hearted man is transformed by his mad love for Carmen. His desire overcomes his inner strength, and in the end, he loses his mind and commits the greatest sin: he takes Carmen's life when he can no longer have her. Don José's spiritual struggle is a passionate male drama. This is what I want to show on stage." – Balázs Vincze, Harangozó Award-winning Meritorious Artist, director and choreographer
