Damnation

A dilapidated mining town, in the middle of nowhere. Middle-aged Karrer’s life, like that of the others, passes aimlessly; only his passion for the local bar singer can pull him out of his apathy to some extent. The woman breaks up with him, but Karrer refuses to accept her rejection. When he is offered a job as a smuggler, he passes the opportunity on to the singer’s husband so that he can try to win her back while he is away.

One of the most important films in the career of Béla Tarr, who passed away in January 2026, and the one that brought him international recognition. His earlier, documentary-style approach was replaced by a more cosmic perspective and an aesthetic based on minimalist, long takes, and this is where his thirty-year-long professional collaboration with future Nobel laureate László Krasznahorkai began.
