A close-knit group of friends is chatting at a table in a pub. It is 1944; the Arrow Cross Party is still in power, but the Russians are already bombing Budapest. Király (László Márkus), the bookseller Kovács (Sándor Horváth), the devout carpenter, Béla (Ferenc Bencze), the pragmatic bar owner, and the cynical Gyuricza (Lajos Őze) all moralize about good food, death, attacks, and war. The next day, they themselves face a serious ethical decision: to submit to or resist the authorities.
