Introduction

The Tihany Abbeyis one of Hungary's oldest and most significant ecclesiastical monuments, founded by King Andrew I in 1055. The abbey is not only a religious center, but also a historical and cultural memorial site that has defined the image of the Tihany Peninsula for centuries. The founding charter, which contains the first written records of the Hungarian language, was born here. The Baroque-style church and monastery complex took on its present form in the 18th century. Visitors can see the abbey church, the crypt, where the tomb of King Andrew I is located , and the Abbey Museum, which presents the history of the abbey, the rules of the Benedictine order, and the spirit of the Tihany landscape. The Tihany Benedictine Abbey is located at the highest point of the settlement, on St. Andrew's Square, offering a breathtaking panorama.
