Starting this year, as part of the Kyōsō Japanese Festival program, we would like to provide an opportunity for talented, young Hungarian artists for whom a connection to Japanese culture plays an important role in their art. For the first time, painter and restorer Hanna Bernát-Hinkó is presenting her watercolors at Dubniczay Palace.

In Japanese symbolism, the red spider lily is associated with death, letting go, and new beginnings, while the koi carp is most often associated with perseverance, courage, and good fortune.

This motif, symbolizing two complementary emotions, embodies the cycle of life. Throughout our lives, we can do nothing else but move forward with our wounds and let them shape our character as we grapple with them. It is in our vulnerability and fallibility that we seek “meaning.” We are all in the current, like fish. In ever-changing waters.
