Dr. Zoltán Korsós, zoologist and former director general of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, spent three years, between 2009 and 2012, in the subtropical archipelago in southern Japan. He visited 53 of the 60 inhabited islands, where he studied the biology of burrowing millipedes. He first shared his unique experiences on his blog, and then in the book based on it, he presented them to readers. This long-awaited volume aims to introduce readers to this distant, almost unknown world, the local people, the isolated, unique cultures, and the exotic, rare wildlife. From the 50,000 photos taken during the expedition, half were selected to create the exhibition about the Rjúkj&Rjúkjú Archipelago, which is being presented with the support of the Hungarian Natural History Museum.

This project has been designated as part of the Bicentennial of Photography by the French Ministry of Culture and is included in the official program of the Bicentennial from September 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027.

The program is being implemented as part of the Veszprém-Balaton European Region of Sport 2026 Program.
