Body in Light: A Play of Movement and Light – We spoke with Réka Szépvölgyi about immersive Pilates
At CODE, we take movement to a new level: mat Pilates is a mindful practice based on the coordination of breathing and precise, controlled movements, which effectively strengthens the deep muscles and develops body awareness. But how does immersive Pilates differ from traditional sessions? This and more will be revealed in the interview.
Let's start with the basics: how long have you been teaching Pilates?
I have been a certified Pilates instructor for nearly five years, but I have over two decades of personal experience practicing Pilates.
What factors do you consider important when designing exercises?
In my approach to teaching, awareness, precision, and the joy of movement play a key role, and I aim to support participants in developing at their own pace and in a safe environment.
Who would you primarily recommend immersive Pilates to?
These sessions are recommended even for complete beginners, as the classes allow participants to gradually master the basics of Pilates, even without any prior experience. The goal of the exercise is for participants to experience not only physical strengthening but also a sense of slowing down, focus, and mindful presence.
How did you hear about CODE, and what do you think makes the immersive movement classes held here so special?
When CODE opened, I immediately realized how exciting it would be to teach in this unique space. I’ve always been drawn to unique venues and experience-based programs. I felt that the combination of Pilates and a digital, immersive space represents a completely new quality that hasn’t been seen in Veszprém yet.
As a Pilates instructor, how unusual did you find the unique hexagonal space, the Hexagon?
For me, the most unusual thing was that the visual elements kept changing throughout the class. The moving and still images were so captivating that I sometimes had to consciously refocus my attention on the instructions; it would have been easy to get lost in them.
In your opinion, how does an immersive Pilates class differ from a traditional studio session?
Music and atmosphere play an important role even in a traditional studio, but the immersive space takes this to a whole new level. The sound, the size of the space, and the visual experience together enable deeper relaxation and focus. I felt it was important to put together a series of exercises that is effective yet leaves room for relaxation and for taking in the experience.
Do you think an immersive space is more likely to enhance performance or to help with self-reflection?
In my opinion, it primarily encourages introspection. The environment is so captivating that it naturally helps you quiet your mind and create genuine “me time.”
What has been your experience with the classes so far?
The first session was a very inspiring experience for me, and I was especially pleased that we were able to start with a full house. The feedback from participants was also very positive; many highlighted the unique atmosphere of the space and how they were able to completely unwind during the class. Several people indicated that they would like to return.
For those who have never tried Pilates before, why do you think it’s a good idea to start with an immersive class?
I structured the class so that even beginners can easily follow along. Participants have time to learn the basics of breathing, while visual and audio effects help them relax. At the end of the class, there is also a relaxation segment featuring a singing bowl and a koshi bell, which help you completely unwind.
If you had to describe the immersive Pilates experience in three words, what would they be?
Unique, uplifting, soothing.
At CODE, we are proud that Veszprém will represent the European Strategy for Sport. We believe in the power of community and in the idea that exercise is not just about performance, but about connection—to yourself and to one another.
