Contemporary Viennese Comic Book Culture - Leopold Maurer

Leopold Maurer is a comic book artist, illustrator, animator and cartoonist born in Vienna in 1969. In addition to his studies in graphic design and fine arts, he also studied sociology at the University of Vienna, and it is perhaps not a major misconception to say that this is precisely the element that most strongly defines Maurer's work. His socially critical illustrations and satirical comic strips are accurate, clever and ironic to the extreme, visions of the times we live in. Hungarian writer Karinthy's famous saying is also one hundred percent true for Maurer: he knows no joke when it comes to humour. Especially when it comes to black humour. On 25th February, the whole afternoon at TEREM will be dedicated to the work of Leopold Maurer. In three blocks of about one and a half hours, you will be introduced to the Viennese artist's works, the influences that moved and inspired him, the comic strip Channel - of which Antal Bayer has also provided a Hungarian translation - and finally the Maurer animation universe. The afternoon will be moderated by Eszter Szép, President of the Hungarian Comic Book Association. The discussion will be held in English. The programme is supported by the Österreich Institut Budapest.
