Colours of Japan Life / Images from Honshū Island

At the temporary exhibition "The Colours of Japan", we explore the natural and cultural heritage of Honshū—the largest island of Japan—through European eyes, accompanied by a photojournalist and an art historian.
The photographs capture not only the hidden beauty of the landscape but also moments from everyday life. The accompanying written chapters, presented in 24 parts, delve into themes such as nature and tradition, creative arts, and culinary delights. The exhibition catalog is a unique blend of photo book and travel guide, offering a collection of impressions based on personal experiences, aiming to inspire all visitors to embark on a journey and seek authentic experiences.
Csaba Toroczkai, a photojournalist with four decades of experience, previously exhibited his works and photobook presenting the Veszprém – Bakony – Balaton region in Tokyo, Veszprém, Düsseldorf, and New York in 2023. During 2023–2024, he traveled to Japan, a distant island nation. His photographs taken on Honshu capture special moments of the surrounding world through nature photography and street photography.
Art historian Bernadett Grasl has been involved in several Japanese-Hungarian art collaborations in recent years as a project leader within the Veszprém – Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture program. Her reflections accompanying Csaba Toroczkai's photographs were inspired by their shared journeys during various exhibitions and cultural events.
The exhibition opens as part of a joint event with the photography exhibition of Bálint Kovács.
