Discussion in the café after the screening:
There are exceptional places and times when you can slow down for a moment, shed our roles, and recharge. What does it take to create such a space and maintain such a community in today's world? The roundtable discussion following the film screening explores the cultural, psychological, and spiritual space – from East to West, from past to present.
The film is accompanied by a discussion about the power of showing each other our vulnerability, when we can be together with ourselves and each other in a transitional space. If we can see the common ground in each other, we will surely leave as different people than when we entered.
Participants in the discussion:
- Zsuzsanna Formanek, psychologist, cultural anthropologist,
- Klára Oó, writer, dramaturge, set designer,
- Paulina Nyebolszin, doula, practitioner of Russian banya traditions,
- Kitty and Miklós Heim-Tóth, hosts and sauna masters of Sauna Sanctuary.
Smoke Sauna Sisterhood
In northern countries, it is believed that the sauna is more than just relaxation: it helps us face ourselves. Director Anna Hints' film, with its impressive cinematography, reveals the most intimate moments of traditional Estonian sauna bathing from the perspective of a close-knit community of women. In a sweat lodge set up in the forest, the women gather and, completely naked, talk about their most cherished secrets, their desires, and traumatic memories, while the boundaries between body and soul dissolve before our eyes.
This hypnotic documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Director in the World Cinema section, and was later awarded Best European Documentary at the European Film Awards. 🎫 TICKETS:
