Recommendations of Balaton Beach Libraries - If You're Eager to Devour Books on the Beach, Not Just Lángos
The summer holidays are upon us and the heat is on, so one of the best things to do is to take a dip in Lake Balaton. But if you're bored of swimming and sunbathing and fancy a good book, don't worry if you don't have anything to read on you! Beach libraries offer a great solution to this problem, and from 1st July you'll find them in several locations around the Lake.
According to a document found in Balaton Museum, the first beach library operated for four years from 1908 in the island bathhouse of Keszthely, and later in the 1960s this temporary lending facility reappeared in Balatonalmádi. It was Pannónia Library that revived this initiative when it opened its beach branch on Wesselényi Beach in 2008. Later on, similar libraries were opened in several other places on Lake Balaton, allowing you to enjoy the library experience even on the waterfront.
Balatonalmádi Beach Library
From 1st July to 22nd August, the beach library is open every day from 12 to 7 pm, and also functions as the Ákom-Bákom Children's Playhouse, free of charge for everyone. The library is professionally supervised by animators who help run the day-to-day operations, and with a constantly expanding range of books on offer, there is something to appeal to everyone.
Keszthely Beach Library
The Fejér György Municipal Library's summer outpost on Keszthely Town Beach has been open for almost fifteen years now, and this year it will welcome readers from 18th July to 19th August, from 10am to 5pm every day. In addition to books, newspapers, magazines, crosswords and colouring books will also be on offer.
Siófok Beach Library
In addition to books, the beach library at Újhelyi Strand also offers magazines, and is open during beach opening hours (9.00-19.00), with various coupons to tempt you to subscribe. And from 14.00 to 16:00 on Monday to Friday afternoons, families can enjoy children's activities if they want to relax after a full day of swimming and playing in the sand.
